Embracing Adoption: Our Poochon, Gucci

Aaaaaand I’m back!!!

Hello there!

Ayana is here and back for the winter season!

My hands are shaking right now as I write this. I’m writing this blog… draft… literally… using my… * drum roll, please! *

ReMarkable 2!!

Quick and straightforward advertising spiel!

Do you like writing with a pen and paper but hate the mess of cluttered papers or a stack of notebooks? Introducing ReMarkable! A digital e-ink pad that allows you to focus on your writing/and makes it feel like you are indeed writing on paper without distractions from emails or websites to visit!

ReMarkable also allows you to write, highlight, or annotate any PDF files you send it to, and it also transcribes your writing for you! How cool is that, right?!

I’ve always wanted something like this since I was a kid. I LOVE writing, but I don’t like typing it up on the computer just so I can share it with my friends (scanning was not that big back then, too). But with the ReMarkable, my dreams came true!!

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with ReMarkable or anything. I just really want to share the news that I’ve been using this for a while now.

P.S. I bought the ReMarkable 2 a few months before they announced ReMarkable Pro. Pro comes with colors and a backlight and was released recently, so you can check/get that if you want. I’m not techy and hence cannot write a review of the specs. But there are a lot of great reviews online that you can peruse.

Alright, now that my ad is out of the way, let’s get this show on the road!

A lot happened to me last year, and as much as I want to share it here, I don’t know where to begin. Do you ever feel like you have so much to say yet don’t know what to say? That feeling where you thought you had a voice, only to not be able to speak up when the time matters? Yeah, that’s how I’ve been feeling all these times.

I don’t know when it started, but I *try* to avoid small talk now. You know, those hollow conversations that start with “Hey, how are ya?!” then you respond, and then that’s where it ends. I imagined a line of words barreling straight to the edge of a cliff. Then, free-falling into the abyss, the echoes slowly faded into nothingness.

Huuuuuhh. What the heck am I talking about? *sweats*

Ah, I like conversations that pique my curiosity. Topics such as history, astronomy, mysteries around the world, or philosophical questions that really force me to think. Yeah, those are my kind of conversations!

Anyway, my husband and I are officially fur-parents now!

Yes, we adopted a sweet, adorable poochon and named him Gucci. 😊

Let me tell you the story of how Gucci wound up in our family.

Since my husband and I don’t have any kids yet, getting a pet has been in our minds for years. Now, you might be wondering, “Why now?” all of a sudden, so let me explain briefly our circumstances back then.

When we first married, we lived temporarily with my older brother. Pets were not allowed in their household before because of some *personal issues* with some household members.

When we moved out of there and rented a small room… wait, I don’t think this needs further explanation. *sweats*

Then, when we moved to our apartment, I believe pets were not allowed there.

And when we bought our house, a jerk of a family member didn’t want any dogs until my nephew turned (3) years old. We ended up leaving and selling that house, so it’s good we didn’t have a pet ’cause I’ll feel bad for it.

Then, we moved back in temporarily with my older brother. And though pets are allowed this time, we couldn’t get any furry pets because his new wife is allergic. And since we’re just temporarily living with them, we…. wouldn’t want to cause any issues.

Which brings us to the now. We moved into my mom’s place and rented her whole house ourselves.

Thus, it was the perfect time to get a pet. 😊

During the week of Christmas ’24, my husband asked me when we could get a pet. Since we were still in the middle of moving, I told him February (so we could focus on unpacking and settling in on January, lol). I could tell he was disappointed about the wait, so I met him halfway, and we reached a compromise. I told him that he could start looking for one. I also reminded him that we would only adopt from the shelter instead of buying (because I learned that dogs at the shelters get euthanized for various reasons – and the shelter running out of room is one of those reasons T-T).

And thus, my husband set off on a journey to find us a pet.

He checked the shelters, that he did. And though there were tons of dogs put up for adoption, my husband was dead set on finding us a bichon frise.

Why a bichon, you ask? Well, they’re cute (although I now believe all dogs are adorable). But, according to my research, Bichons make a good pet for first-time pet owners. Plus, they’re smart and hypo-allergenic too!

My husband didn’t give up easily on his search. Tenacity is one of his strongest suits, though sometimes it can be borderline stubborn, too. You see, when my husband sets his mind on something, he won’t stop until he gets what he wants (coughmotorcylelicensecough). He found someone online with puppies out for adoption, but this turned… sour. That didn’t stop him, though, from finding another puppy for adoption.

And that’s when he found Gucci’s owners, who put him up for adoption because they couldn’t afford to take care of him and his sister. Why didn’t we get his sister, you ask? I’ve thought about this too myself. But… well, we can only take care of one pet for now, and we chose to go with the male puppy because I was scared of the fact that female dogs would… bleed… too, every month.

When my husband held him in his arms and walked back into the car, I couldn’t believe it was happening. At that moment, I knew he was meant to be with us. Every single day since then, my heart has been filled with joy. I couldn’t believe that I could love a dog this much. Sure, he frustrates me sometimes when we’re trying to teach him. But that frustration goes away whenever he cuddles with us and I see those sweet, puppy dog eyes. He may be a puppy, but he allowed me to experience what having our own family feels like.

Long story short, I fell in love with Gucci the moment I saw him. 🥰

P.S.2. We ended up not adopting from a shelter, but I still support adopting one from them. I also believe it’s fair to adopt from families with extra pets they couldn’t afford to take care of. Becoming a pet owner is a huge responsibility, and I salute everyone who has ever decided to adopt or take in a stray.

P.S.3. We took Gucci to the emergency clinic the other day. Why? I’ll tell you the story at another time.

Thanks for reading! I hope you stick around and join us on our journey as first-time fur-parents. Oh, and if you have any pet stories too that you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to hit me up! It would be nice to hear from other fur-parents too. 🙂
